In very good condition, here we have a scarce antique copy of "Principia Botanica: or, a Concise and Easy Introduction to the Sexual Botany of Linnaeus," written by Robert Waring Darwin who was the great-uncle of Charles Darwin, the famous evolutionary naturalist. Published in 1810, a third edition by Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme of London. In a later, fine leather binding. Written to help students easily navigate Carl Linnaeus's "Sexual System" of plant classification. Featuring three comprehensive indexes linking common English plant names to their formal Latin genera. Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has an inked name at the top of the title page, also the odd word or pencil tick in the text - but nothing too obtrusive. Unillustrated. Untrimmed fore-edge. Some tanning to the outer page edges. Newer endpapers which would have been added when the later leather re-binding was done. In a fine, full-polished calf-leather with blind stamped border decoration to the upper front and lower back panels. Five raised bands to the spine, with ornate gilt decoration in the compartments. All very good indeed, just a few light scuffs to the spine - but minor. A lovely looking volume. H 24 cm x W 16 cm, 326 pages plus indices, 0.61 kg.
