Leather spine desiccated and flaking. Old manuscript label on front cover is torn. Bookplate of William L. Powell on front pastedown. Interior lightly toned with scattered foxing. Colored plates appear lightly faded, but that could also have been the ochres and pigments used. Rear has dampness staining throughout. Old blooms have occurred. Binding intact. Free of known markings. Please see photos. Part two only. John Bell ( 1763 1820) was a Scottish anatomist and surgeon. The brother of Charles Bell, John was the first to legate the gluteal artery. He also successfully tied the common carotid and the internal iliac arteries. Bell was also a talented artist, and was one of the few medical men to illustrate his own work. In 1816 he was injured by a fall from his horse and in the following year went to Italy for the benefit of his health. He died at Rome on 15 April 1820 and he is buried in the Protestant Cemetery, Rome, just behind the tomb of poet John Keats. His works also included Principles of Surgery (1801), Anatomy of the Human Body, which went through several editions and was translated into German, and Observations on Italy, published by his widow in 1825. This work, first published in 1801, went through many editions. The plates are the author s own work and remain highly esteemed today. Incomplete as a set - PART II ONLY!
