Madras is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu (Madras, today, is also known as Chennai i). Located at the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal, it is a major commercial, cultural, economic and education center in South India. It is also known today as the "Cultural Capital of South India"/ There is a tiny contemporary 1881 pastedown in the bottom left corner of the back right endpaper: "Bound at the Foster Press, Madras." Translated into the Telugu Language. Madras; for the Madras Auxiliary Bible Society, 1881. Bound in custom full black calf with gilt presentation stamped to front covers. Unusual translation of the Bible into the Telugu language. Presented in custom binding to Rev. E. Unangst in 1882. Front cover stamped with message in gilt: "To the Rev. E. Unangst, D.D., on His 25th Year in India, From Those For Whom He Has Labored, Guntoor, 1st April 1888." Erias Unangst (1823-1903) was a Doctor of Divinity, Lutheran Minister, born in Easton, Pennsylvania, graduated from Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg. He worked 36 years as a missionary to Guntoor, India. Died in Hollidaysburg, PA. Rev. Unangst was fluent in Greek, Hebrew, and Telugu and worked on a thorough revision of The Holy Bible in Telugu. Erias Unangst, A Gettysburg College Graduate - Ordained and married in 1857, he depart for India with Adam Long. He remained there until 1871, when he returned to the United State briefly. He was awarded an honory doctorate (D.D.) at Wittenberg College in 1878, and remained in India until 1895. Sources clearly indicate that Unangst's thirty five years in India were well spent. He served alongside Adam Long for several years, but when Long left for Europe or passed away, Unangst was left in charge of all four stations in the Telugu region: Guntur, Palnad, Rajahmundry, and Samulcotta. Perhaps the most important work that Erias Unangst completed during his time in India was translation of the New Testament that was thereafter used in the mission field. He also composed various tracts and hymns, which he then translated into Telugu. This type of communication with the natives would certainly have been invaluable to the missionaries, allowing them to convert even greater numbers if Indians. In 1895, Unangst left India for the last time after 35 years of service there. Behind him, he left a legacy that may be considered unrivaled. back warehouse- FL Collection - 1.
