Item description from seller

Facsimile of the 1892 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Newark, New Jersey (Volume One), reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the south-western quarter of the city, from the stores, churches and Court House along Broad and Market Streets and Springfield Avenue, through the tanneries, hat factories, breweries and jewelry works around High, Washington and Court Streets and Lincoln Park, to the residential avenues out past Woodland and Fairmount Cemeteries to the Clinton Township line. The eighty-four numbered sheets work block by block from the stores, banks, hotels and theatres along Broad Street, Market Street, Springfield Avenue, Washington Street and Halsey Street - the City Hall, the Essex County Court House, the National State Bank Building, the Grand Opera House, Jacobs' and Waldmann's theatres, the Mansion House, Doelger's and the Elizabeth hotels, Green Street Hall, the Casino, Saenger and Turn Verein halles and the Caledonian and Sattler's parks - through the Pennsylvania Railroad passenger station and freight house, the Central Railroad of New Jersey depot, the Lehigh Valley freight depot, the Rapid Transit and Newark and Irvington electric car houses and power houses, the Newark Electric Light and Power Company, the Halsey & Smith, S. Halsey & Sons, Lang, Carr and Newark Cordovan tanneries, the Wooley & Crane, Drastal & Hein, Keidel and Seitz hat factories, the Alling, Durand, Herpers Bros. and Unger Bros. jewelry works, Baker & Co.'s gold refinery, the American Watch Case Company, the Becht, Beck, Bunger, Dorsch and Felter shoe factories, the Ferris Bros. and Heilner & Strauss corset factories, the Hill's Union, Phoenix, Citizens, Trefz and Krueger breweries, the Feigenspan and Kaiser bottling works, the Bigelow varnish works, the Hay Foundry and Iron Works, the Weston Electric Instrument Company, the Spencer Optical Company, the Whitman Saddle Company, the Peddie trunk factory, the Colyer and Lockwood carriage factories, the Newark Spice Mills, the Powers & McCowan granite works and the coal and lumber yards, to the Hospital of St. Barnabas, the City Alms House, the Home for the Friendless, the Hebrew and St. Peter's orphan asylums, the Newark Academy, St. Benedict's College, the Camden Street, Marshall Street, Monmouth Street, Eighteenth Avenue and Thirteenth Ward schools, the Hebrew Free School, St. Mary's, St. Bridget's, St. Columba's, St. Peter's and the Polish Catholic churches, Grace Episcopal, High Street Presbyterian, First Congregational, the Church of the Redeemer, the German churches and the Bene Shurun synagogue, and the residential avenues around Lincoln Park and Clinton Park out to Woodland Cemetery, Fairmount Cemetery and the Clinton Township line. In 1892 the Sanborn-Perris Map Company of New York surveyed Newark for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city at fifty feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city. This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the combined title and index sheet, the contour map of the city water works with its report, the key map, all eighty-four numbered map sheets and the four skeleton sheets. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Newark address back to 1892. 92 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback.
