About this Item
7" x 10" photo album with 44 leaves/88 pages; 76 sepia photographs, carefully dated and captioned in white ink on the faded black pages; There is one loose photo. Photos are various sizes with some full page photos from Maine. Absolutely stunning assemblage of personal photographs. The person who assembled the album clearly enjoyed exploring New England and the Tri-State area. All portraits are annotated with initials but no full names; all landscapes are titled with the location and the state. Like many photo-albums of the era, this was kept and filled by a member of the upper-crust, who clearly enjoyed documenting summer vacations; most photos are of lakesides, boathouses, and high-class hotels, and everyone in the portraits is garbed in the luxurious fashions of the period - bowlers, top hats, boaters abound, as do long black overcoats and finely-tailored long summer dresses. Lakes pictured include Sunapee, Massapoag, Saranac, Mirror, Capsuptic, Umbagog, and Upper Richardson. The Boardwalk in Atlantic City is featured, as is a baseball game in New Hampshire; Sachems Head Yacht Club, on the Long Island Sound; and several images of the Franconia Inn of New Hampshire, which seemed to be a favorite of the compiler. Five multi-photo "panoramas" have been carefully cut and pasted side-by-side to create a wider image. The album is very-well worn, with the leather from the spine all gone, exposing the stitching, and both covers worn all around the edges; but the "feel" is very-much present, and beautifully evocative of its era and the hours spent on its careful creation. Pages are all present and still tightly-bound, with very little in the way of tearing or folding, although the photos themselves are in many cases faded. The last photograph in the album is very likely of the keeper of the album herself - in a rowboat, oars in hand, in a flowing white dress, with log cabins on the nearby shore. As with the other beautiful photographs in this album, the figure is not identified by name. Seller Inventory # 909
