The Collected Mathematical Works of George William Hill. Published by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, June, 1905 - April, 1907. Complete in Four Volumes. Paper covered bindings measure 12 x 9.5?, 4tos.

In fair condition. Spines of Vols. II & III LACKING & replaced with plain ex-library brown paper - ex-library ink marginalia (title). Original spines of Vols. I & IV cracked and chipped with exposed binding. All spines exhibit ex-library locator code stickers on tails. Boards scuffed at edges and corners. All edges deckled - TOP EDGES UNCUT! Ex-library permanent ink stamps found on all front paste-downs: ?Wilmington Institute Free Library, Wilmington Delaware?. All gutters split with exposed binding & deteriorating binder?s waste. Vol. I?s frontispiece exhibits ex-library hole-punched stamp. Normal toning through text-blocks, but overall text-blocks remain VERY CLEAN. Perfect candidate for restoration. Bindings intact. George William Hill (1838 ? 1914) was an American astronomer and mathematician. Working independently and largely in isolation from the wider scientific community, he made major contributions to celestial mechanics and to the theory of ordinary differential equations. The importance of his work was explicitly acknowledged by Henri Poincar� in 1905. In 1909 Hill was awarded the Royal Society's Copley Medal, "on the ground of his researches in mathematical astronomy". Hill is remembered for the Hill differential equation, along with the Hill sphere.
