String sewn wraps. Approx. 13" x 8". Stitched at the top. 104 pages of mimeographed typescript front sides only (rectos). Illustrated with 6 maps in the back (2 folding with one of 2 split). Paper has corner creases, small corner tears, light soil, and chipped back cover. Edge wear to the maps. Notations in ink on a map in back. The petition is signed at the end by S. F. Stewart. This petition was addressed to then Secretary of War William Howard Taft. The Historical Committee of Turchin's Brigade argues in detail that it's unit under the command of Union Brigadier General John Basil Turchin captured "De Long Point" on November 25th, 1863 during the Battle of Missionary Ridge. This important event contributed to the success of the Union Army victory. However the battlefield was part of the Chattanooga National Park Commission. The commission credited the victory to the 2d Minnesota. The details provided in this petition along with the maps bolstered the claim of the petitioners. Is it possible due to Turchin's reputation in the South that the Commission avoided crediting Turchin's Brigade with the victory? No copies of this petition found in OCLC. Not referenced in Civil War bibliographies. John Basil Turchin, born in Russia, fought in the Crimean War. He emigrated to Chicago with his wife in 1856. He joined the Union Army in 1861 becoming Colonel of the 19th Illinois Regiment. While stationed in northern Alabama in 1862 General Buell Court Maritaled Turchin for the destruction of property in Athens Alabama. However, President Lincoln promoted Turchin to General thus overriding Buell's decision. General Turchin was prominent in the Battles of Chickamuaga, Chattanooga, and the Atlanta Campaign.
