Illustrated with Seventy-Two specially made diagrams and authoritative photographs furnished by leading automobile manufacturers showing actual parts, all in correct proportion. New York: The Norman W. Henley Publishing Co., 1919. Early Printing. 178 p + 36 p publisher's catalogue. Original red cloth binding measuring 7.5 x 5", 12mo. In fair condition. Red cloth boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine collapsed; painted white lettering moderately dulled & rubbed. Binding is stained. Ex-library white manuscript lettering at tail of spine. Ex-library bookplate found on front paste-down: "War Service Library." Off-setting on front end-page from bookplate. Ex-libris blind stamp found on bottom corner of front end-page: "Library of William S. Jackson." Front gutter cracked at front fly-leaf. Blind stamp found on bottom corner of page 16: "Rolling Wheels Incorporated 1969 Pennsylvania." Fold-out at page 66 folded incorrectly with exposed bottom edge & lightly chipping. Normal toning throughout text-block, mostly at edges of leaves. Ex-library permanent ink stamp found on rear end-page: "American Library Assn. Camp Knox Library." Ink marginalia at top edge of rear paste-down. Binding intact. Please see photos. The Library War Service was established by the American Library Association in 1917 to provide library services to American soldiers training in camps and serving overseas in World War I. ALA President Walter Lewis Brown initiated a partnership between the American Library Association and the Library of Congress. Between 1917 and 1920, the ALA raised $5 million from public donations, erected 36 camp libraries, distributed 7 to 10 million books and magazines, and provided library collections to more than 500 locations, including military hospitals. The Library War Service also provided books in Braille to soldiers that were blinded in battle. Library War Service librarians wore uniforms, similar to those worn by other volunteer groups like the American Red Cross, and the Library War Service provides some of the earliest examples of women participating in uniformed war service overseas.
