World War I, or the Great War, was a global conflict from July 1914 to November 1918, initiated by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. It involved the Allied Powers (France, Britain, Russia, later U.S.) against the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire). The war was defined by devastating trench warfare and, Encyclopedia Britannica resulted in over 16 million deaths and the collapse of four major empires.
