After World War One, Samoa came under New Zealand mandatory authority and Government House was situated in "Vailima" built and lived in by Robert Louis Stevenson from 1890 to 1894. A year after his death, Stevenson's "Vailima Letters" were published posthumously (1895). Hassell Garland's "Vailima" Letters emulate R.L.S's style in describing life on Samoa.
