About this Item
12" x 10" album with 25 leaves/35 pages, and 159 photographs depict a wealthy couple from the North Shore of Long Island and New York City, during the 1930's. The album belongs to JD Tew, whose name is on some of the ephemera in the album. A member card for the Sands Point Bath Club in Sands Point, Long Island for J. Dinsmore Tew, is inside. It is possible that this Tew was the President of B.F. Goodrich at that time, though I think this might be his son, who had the same name. The people shown in the album, had money. Inside the front cover is an invitation with a martini shaker on the cover. Inside is the name Miss Cordelia Gurnee at East 57th Street. Gurnee was a socialite who made her debut in New York City in 1926. Locations in the album are as follows: Garden City, NY, Southampton,NY, Paul Mellon's House, Sands Point, Old Westbury, Coral Beach, Belmont Golf Course Atlantic Beach, NC, et al. They also traveled to St. George and Bermuda on a cruise ship. They were members of a Beach Club; dined at the prestigious Stork Club, and the Place Pigalle. They were married in June of 1935 (the receipt from the wedding breakfast is retained here). Also retained, though loose is a certificate of insurance, the ferry schedule in Bermuda, and the cover of the February 22, 1941 New York World Telegram newspaper front page, talking about the war in Europe, and also details the trials of Tony Biddles, a fellow of member of the Nassau and New York society of the elite. All photographs are glued to the page. Two are missing. Some photographs are cut or torn before they were glued to the page. Specs and dates are provided in blue ink. Two photographs are loose toward the end of the album, along with the ferry schedule, certificate of insurance, and a scrap paper. Several pages at the back of the book are not utilized. In overall good condition. Seller Inventory # 973
