Synopsis: The sixties is considered to be one of the most tumultuous and celebrated decades in our nation's history. This book examines the decade's major controversies by presenting opposing views on war dissenters, youth counterculture, and women's liberation.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 7 Up-Hurley presents the basic rationale and impetus for the anti-Vietnam War protests and hippie culture in the first chapter; the second deals with the civil rights and women's liberation movements. The language is straightforward but the occasional use of present tense as though this is the `60s is disconcerting. A final chapter provides perspective by examining whether or not the societal changes brought about in that decade have been harmful or beneficial. Opinions expressed in the text do not appear in quotes but are fully cited in numbered footnotes at the end of their respective sections. Thought-provoking study questions are appended. The real treasure surfaces in the appendix of "Excerpts from Original Documents Pertaining to the 1960s." Meaty selections from U.S. government propaganda, in-depth news articles and interviews, activist-group manifestos, and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech are among the invaluable primary-source materials made readily available in this section. A chronology of significant political, historic, and publishing events during this decade join two annotated bibliographies and a fine index to enhance this work's value as a research tool.-Ann G. Brouse, Big Flats Branch Library, NY
