Synopsis:

1982 is a hard year to defend, difficult to love, being forever tied to a vile decade defined by the twin towers of greed and poverty, a decade where music seemed to become increasingly inauthentic, and visuals became more important than sound. Whilst this is primarily a book about music, it is also a book about the events of 1982, and how these two appeared to become increasingly estranged, of how after a few years when musicians were one of us, they pulled away to become one of them. Whilst the previous few years had witnessed social commentary in the charts, through the anger of punk, the despair of new wave, the isolation of post-punk, the anti-racism of Two Tone, and the call to arms of Roots Reggae, chart acts in 1982 generally tended to avoid singing about the world. Instead, they retreated into fantasy, into what would become known as aspiration, returning to songs of love and desire, instead of songs of hope and hate. It was a year of escapism, and by escaping the reality of Britain the artists were able to re-invent themselves as success stories.
