This broadside is a wonderful expression of Labor's ability to care for their own. Progressing through, and showing the happy life of a working family, the death of their breadwinner through a terrible train accident and the ultimate care given to the bereaved family with both money and a cheque from the BLF. One of the panels depicts the same broadside displayed behind the widow as she recieves the money from the organization that her dearly departed was wise enough to belong to. The organization began in 1873 as the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen (B of LF), a mutual benefit society for workers employed as firemen for steam locomotives, before expanding its name in 1907 in acknowledgement that many of its members had been promoted to the job of railroad engineer.
