Title: 19th-Century Hand-Coloured Lithograph of Ornate Medieval and Renaissance Shields Description: This beautifully hand-coloured lithograph presents four distinct medieval and Renaissance shields, showcasing the diversity of European heraldic and military designs. Taken from *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums* (1842), by Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, this plate highlights both the artistry and practical use of shields in battle and ceremonial contexts. The shields include: 1. Left: A large oval shield featuring a quartered heraldic design of red and white checkerboard patterns and a golden floral emblem against a black background. This classic design reflects the importance of heraldry in identifying knights and noble houses on the battlefield. 2. Center: A round, decorative shield adorned with delicate floral motifs in blue and silver, suggesting its use in ceremonial displays or processions rather than combat. 3. Bottom: A smaller, convex buckler, with red-lined edges and a pointed steel boss, designed for deflecting blows in close combat. 4. Right: A tall rectangular shield with a striking golden lion rampant against a deep green background, bordered by intricate silver detailing. This shield symbolizes power and heraldic prestige, often associated with noble families or royal lineage. The vibrant hand-colouring accentuates the shields' decorative qualities while illustrating the craftsmanship of medieval armory. Each shield balances functionality with artistry, providing a glimpse into the role of shields as both tools of war and symbols of identity. Condition: The lithograph is in excellent condition, with clear margins, precise detailing, and vivid colouring. Minor age-related foxing adds character to this antique work. This rare print is ideal for collectors of medieval history, heraldic art, or military antiques. Perfect for display in studies, libraries, or galleries, it celebrates the craftsmanship and cultural significance of medieval shields.…
