Major revision for 2015 2016!
Provides an overview of the structure and function of the retina and its relationship to the pigment epithelium, choroid and vitreous. Describes the major vitreoretinal disorders and appropriate diagnostic methods and treatment principles.
This major revision of section 12 features two new chapters; one on retinovascular disease associated with cardiovascular disease and the other on retinal toxicities of systemic medications. Other changes include updates on the management of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and venous occlusive disease. An emphasis on imaging is demonstrated in the new edition with more than 175 new or replacement images, and ten new surgical videos (access via QR codes) to illustrate common vitreoretinal procedures.
Separate chapters are devoted to age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity, including the latest imaging techniques and choroidal detail. Selected therapeutic topics include laser therapy and vitreoretinal surgery.
Upon completion of Section 12, readers should be able to:
* Select appropriate methods of examination and ancillary studies for the diagnosis of vitreoretinal disorders
* Describe the principles of medical and surgical treatment of vitreoretinal disorders
* Incorporate data from major prospective clinical trials in the management of selected vitreoretinal disorders
Section chair: Colin A. McCannel, MD
About the BCSC
The Academy's Basic and Clinical Science Course (BCSC) is ophthalmology's definitive compilation of scientific research and clinical experience. It is continually updated by a faculty of more than 80 expert ophthalmologists. Each of the 13 volumes includes fundamental clinical knowledge; numerous tables, photos and illustrations; self-assessment questions with answers; and opportunities for earning AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(TM).
Beginning with the 2013-2014 edition, the Academy and the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) have partnered to make the BCSC the standard text for all European ophthalmology training programs. The EBO now recommends the BCSC as the primary educational resource for European trainees and ophthalmologists studying for the annual EBO Diploma Exam.
