About this Item
58 lines on 3pp 4to, sl. tears at folds. Faint pencil address to 'W. Brown'. The writer informs his sister that 'Abt. 18 months ago I was stopped in the streets of New York by 2 officers who stated that some person had given information relative to my leaving England - On going with them to the Station House some man was introduced to me who knew me at B---y. I told them that they had no authority for detaining me.' He is released after four hours following enquiries of the British Ambassador - 'they told me I was at perfect liberty as nothing was against me. This man I did not know altho' I thought I had seen him before, he expected that a large reward had been offered for me. Respecting my safety I do not think that the Government can take me after a lapse of 2 years from the Country. I shd. like to know who told Mr Cundall and who gave this information to B---y.' The writer reports that he is settled in New York in business but 'shall endeavour to keep away as much as possible for a short time.' He is concerned that he never received a letter from Davis and adds: 'My own opinion is that they cannot detain me after so long a period as 2 years'.
