Lacks map. Dark green full leather binding with gilt lettering on spine. Four raised bands. 6" x 9." 170 pages, complete, except for map. Pages are clean and intact overall except for light age toning, light to moderate foxing, occasional annotations (at least two written in pen in bottom margin of Page 59 and on a back flyleaf), and slight offsetting from the printed text. Covers are virtually pristine and intact except for slight darkening, a few tiny marks, and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. A scientific report by I. N. Nicollet who worked for the Bureau of the Corps of Topographical Engineers. Nicollet made this report following a scientific expedition in which he traveled from the mouth of the Mississippi River to its headwaters and to other places in the Midwest and South such as the Red River, Arkansas River, and Missouri River. Included in the report are Nicollet's descriptions of Midwestern geography, flora, fauna, and other natural attributes; descriptions of Indigenous cultures and customs; a "Sketch of the Early History of St. Louis"; various scientific tables; and a list of species and the locations where they were found.…
