Add to basketWarwick: Henry H. Lacy, Printer, 1912. [2], [8 pp. of ads], [1]-88 pp., [8 pp. ads & index]. 21 x 14 cm. White paper coverd boards with red titling, with brown cloth spine. Soiling and rubbing to boards, with wear to corners and along extremities of boards. Some sunning to spine, with rubbing and two 4 cm split areas to cloth along rear joint. Moderate toning to endpapers from adhesive, with split along front hinge (still holding well). Interior mostly clean, but with occasional staining to some pages that clearly had favorite recipes. Mull somewhat visible in gutter between pages 54 and 55, with stepping on fore edge from final gatherings; binding still holding quite well. Available at Guy's Cliffe at Warwick, the cookbook was "Sold in Aid of The Training Home for Girls" of Kenilworth. At the time of publication, this girls' reformatory was located in its new purpose-built facility just outside of Kenilworth, having been moved five years earlier from where it was originally located in Coventry. By 1921, however, four girls tried to escape the school, and upon their return, one of the girls lit a fire in the room where they were being held. The situation led to a state of near-rioting by the others in the reformatory. Two years later another young woman got ahold of a knife and threatened the staff with it. When the police arrived, she caught an office unaware by the throat, got him to the ground, and sat on his head. Another officer tried to stop her, only to be bitten on the arm, the wound going down to the bone. Trouble, including rioting, spread throughout the school over the next several days before it was finally contained. The home was eventually closed in 1985, and the facility has been converted into housing. This cookbook contains 300 British and International recipes provided by women in Warwick and the surrounding area, and is divided into the following sections: Meat, Savouries, Soup, &c.; Puddings, Sweets, Cakes, Etc.; and Jams, Pickles, Chutnies, Etc. . Hard Cover. Good.
