"长篇小说《天人五衰》陆续连载于《新潮》杂志1970年7月号至1971年1月号，于当年2月由新潮社出版单行本。《丰饶之海》四部曲包括《春雪》《奔马》《晓寺》《天人五衰》，是三岛由纪夫生前最后写作的作品，讲述了大正初年（1912）到20世纪70年代，约六十年间发生的几乎所有重大历史事件，是一部全景式的巨著。每卷以一位主要人物为轴心，通过三颗黑痣次第连接，围绕轮回转生这一主题演绎故事，并以本多繁邦一人贯穿始终。这部被日本人称作"大河小说"的作品，对人生中的根本问题一一加以拷问，诸如生存、爱恋、战争、死亡和佛缘等，最后演绎出"世事皆幻象，人生即虚无"的主题。

"天人五衰"源自佛教思想，意指衣服垢秽、头上华萎、腋下流汗、身体臭秽、不乐本座，指的是欲界、色界之天人于寿命将尽时所表现之五种异像。小说以20世纪60年代末叶至70年代初为背景。年近八旬的本多繁邦发现孤儿安永透身上有三颗黑痣，却未调查清楚月光公主的死亡日期和他的诞辰，就把透过继为养子。透对本多百般虐待。本多的友人庆子了解到轮回转生的秘密，便当面戳穿了透是冒牌货。透的自尊心受到伤害，服毒自杀未遂，双目失明。本多繁邦觉得透也像是松枝清显转生的，他自知时日不多，赴月修寺探问绫仓聪子转生之谜。不想聪子早已将俗世忘却尽净，视本多为陌路，更不知昔日恋人松枝清显为何人。本多只觉得像是做了一场梦。小说结尾，场面寂寥，笔墨玄奥，一切皆归于"空无"之中。
