Synopsis

This is the 37th edition in Mark H. McCormack's annual series, The World Of Professional Golf 2003. The year in golf for 2002 is fully chronicled with chapters on each of the major championships and on each of the world's tours, including seniors and women. There are scoring summaries from every professional tournament playied in the world during the year, detailed information on the World Ranking and - exclusive to this publication - the World Money Lists. Tiger Woods continued to add to his record as he sought to become the first ever to win all four professional major championships in the same year. He won the first two in the Masters Tournament and then with a wire-to-wire victory in the U.S. Open Championship, but he faltered in the wind and rain of the British Open Championship. Ernie Els went on to claim that title, and in the year's final major, the PGA Championship, little-known Rich Beem held off Woods by one stroke. Nevertheless, Woods led the U.S. PGA Tou for the fourth consecutive year and for the fifth time in six years. Going into October, Woods had five victories for the year on the PGA Tour and six overall. Phil Mickelson, the runner-up to Woods in the U.S. Open, also was second on the PGA Tour and second on the World Ranking. He had two victories for the year. Two South Africans, Els and Retief Goosen, were ranked third and fourth in the world, and Goosen led the European Tour money list for the second year in a row. Young Spaniard Sergio Garcia ranked fifth. Other headliners of the year included the victory by Europe, led by captain Sam Torrance and star of the match Colin Montgomerie, over the United States in the Ryder Cup. But no one won more than Annika Sorenstam, who dominated women's golf with nine LPGA wins, and 11 worldwide, going into October.
