Synopsis

Colonel Peter Amadeus is a national hero. Veteran of the Falklands War and almost every military engagement the British have fought in a quarter of a century. But the nation no longer wants him. Thrown on the scrapheap, along with thousands of other soldiers, by a Government that cares more for cheap publicity than principle.
Amadeus feels betrayed. He wants an apology, but this is not a Government that believes in apologizing. So for Amadeus it becomes a matter of honour. And retribution. He gathers a small team of old soldiers around him, and London becomes a city under siege, its lifelines cut, its Government presented with a final ultimatum. Either the Prime Minister goes, or London will be destroyed.
Only one man stands between the capital and disaster - Tom Goodfellowe, a backbench MP who can't even sort out his own private life, let alone his public duties. A man torn between ambition, honour and love - with the fate of London in his hands.

About the Author

For two decades, Michael Dobbs has been at the right hand of political controversy. He was at Mrs Thatcher's side as she took her first step into Downing Street as Prime Minister, and was a key aide to John Major when he was voted out. In between times he was bombed in Brighton, banished from Chequers and blamed for failing to secure a Blair-Major television debate.

From AudioFile

Readers familiar with Dobbs's HOUSE OF CARDS trilogy will be delighted by the machinations in his most recent book--here we find the same satirical view of English politics and politicians; the prominence of idealistic, doomed mavericks; and the emphasis on sexual intrigue. Michael Kitchen, who has read Dobbs for Chivers before, clearly relishes the roles he portrays and delights in the convolutions of the plot. He makes the major characters unusually alive and believable, infusing them with the personalities obviously intended by the author. His pacing and subtle variation in tone and emphasis are the best. This is an addicting listen. R.E.K. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
