In tiny Murphy’s Harbour, where Reid Bennett serves as the one-man police force, questions and dead bodies tend to pile up all at once. The morning starts with Reid chasing off a gang of threatening teens with a baseball bat. Minutes later, Reid learns that a bank robber might be headed his way looking for vengeance. But the day does not really start rolling until Reid finds a dead woman in the trunk of a waterlogged car. What follows is a fast-paced thriller involving rich lawyers, a questionable movie producer, and quite a few shifting identities. Everyone seems to be circling everyone else in a complicated orbit of sex and money. Can all these events be tied together?

Ted Wood has been a flier, a beat cop, a pinboy, a soda-jerk, a freight porter, and an advertising hotshot. He has also written dozens of short stories, hundreds of magazine articles, including two long-running humor columns, television plays and one musical comedy. He has had fourteen books, thirteen of them novels, published in Canada, the Unieted States, Britain, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, and Japan. After being widowed, he married Mary in 1975. He is the father of three, stepfather to another three and granddad to a total of nine, counting steps and one step-step. He now runs Whitby’s Ezra Annes House bed and breakfast in partnership with Mary. Jack Barnao is the pseudonym for Ted Wood, author of the acclaimed Reid Bennett mystery series. Barnao’s novels are Lockestep, Hammerlocke, and Timelocke.
Between visits to the hospital where his wife is in the process of delivering their first child, Murphy's Harbor police chief Reid Bennett (Dead in the Water, etc.) and his super-sleuth dog Sam must grapple with continued gang vandalism; the disappearance of Moira Waites and her alleged lover Stu Jeffries; and the murder of Stu's wife, Carolyn, found dead in the trunk of Moira's husband's car, and identified by him. Who drove Waites's car into the lake? To get at the answer, Reid lets an Indian sidekick roust a yuppie-turned-thug; uncovers a wife-killing scenario that ties lawyer Waites to an escaped con who hates Reid; breaks up a kidnap attempt; finds more bodies; and puts another name to that body in the trunk. At the root of it all: drugs and revenge, leading to new father Reid's reevaluation of which is most important to him, his family or his job. Despite a few too obvious red herrings and a hero who's queasier at the thought of putting his childbirth training in action than in facing both barrels of a shotgun: a fairly sturdy, small-town tale, with quiet appeal. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP.
