G.K. Chesterton (1874Ð1936) is generally remembered as the author of the Father Brown detective stories, but in the 1920s and 30s he was regarded as one of the major religious writers of the day, and was a great influence on C.S. Lewis. He wrote for the man on the street, seeking to bring Christian truth and questions of religious, business and political ethics to a wider audience.

Now a new generation is rediscovering Chesterton through the recent revival of interest in ethical issues. There is also a campaign to canonize Chesterton, launched in 1995 and endorsed by such senior figures as Cardinal Emmet Carter of Toronto. This anthology is compiled from the best of his religious writings, including Orthodoxy, The Everlasting Man, The Book of Job and his poetry. There is an extensive introduction by the editor on Chesterton's life and relevance today.
