1900-1981. Writer, editor and professional countryman, author of British Game (1946). Prolific author of books on wildlife, pets, country sports, gardening etc. Editor of The Field 1938-46. Veteran broadcaster (Field Fare 1940-5, There and Back 1947-9) and newspaper and magazine columnist. Numerous interests included fairgrounds, gypsies and boxing; sympathies emraced poachers as well as gamekeepers.
