Synopsis

io9 's 15 Must-Read Science Fiction and Fantasy Books Arriving This August

The Verge's New All the Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Books Coming Out In August

Science Fiction and Fantasy Books You'll Want to Read ( Kirkus , August)

Leandra Weal is in trouble.

After obtaining a prophetic spell that provides a glimpse one day into her future, Leandra discovers that she will either murder someone she loves or die herself. Problem is, the potential murder victim could be nearly anyone in her family.

That’s a pretty big problem for a woman who has a shark god for a lover, a hostile empress for an aunt, a rogue misspelling wizard for a father, and a mother who―especially when arguing with her daughter―can be a real dragon.

Leandra’s quest to unravel the mystery of the murder she will commit becomes more urgent when her chronic disease flares up. As chaos spreads, the Weals must race to uncover the shocking truth about a prophesied demonic invasion, human language, and their own identities–if they all don't kill each other first.

From Blake Charlton comes an exciting stand-alone fantasy in the acclaimed epic fantasy series that began with Spellwright and Spellbound.

Review

"I'm fascinated to see what happens next, and will be following every word with the absorption of an apprentice spellwright. You will be, too." --Tad Williams, bestselling author of "Shadowmarch
"
"Think words can't hurt you? Sometimes, they can kill. The spells of textual magic of this enthralling take will demonstrate how." --Terry Brooks, "New York Times "bestselling author

"An enjoyable, well-written novel, with a satisfying conclusion." "--SFX Magazine", 4.5 stars

"A refreshingly new look at magic and the power of words. Nicodemus is a strong protagonist, but the supporting cast is equally as memorable. This series opener [will] resonate in the reader's mind. Highly recommended." "--Library Journal", starred review

"Spellwright""brims with a love for the genre and a thrill for written language." "--Chicago Sun-Times"

"A well-written and cleverly presented fantasy with strong characters and surprising plot twists, this saga should appeal to those who enjoyed its predecessor as well as fans of Terry Brooks and L. E. Modesitt Jr." --"Library Journal, "starred review

"Charlton succeeds brilliantly here; this is no mere setup for the final installment. Absolutely not to be missed." --"Kirkus Reviews, "starred review

""Spellbound" is an adventure fantasy filled with mystery, interesting characters and a unique world that mixes the fantasy cliches so many of us know and love, with a brand new feel that is purely Charlton." --"Bookworm Blues"

""Spellbound" is a daring new work of fantasy that pushes the "Spellwright" trilogy closer to its conclusion while remaining just as emotionally and intellectually challenging as the first installment." --"Rob Will Review"

"""The story is loaded with interesting characters, a story that works well and that comes unexpectedly at points, and a world that is worth returning to often."
--"Worlds in a Grain of Sand"

Paperback. Condition: New. The long awaited sequel to SPELLBOUND, which was listed by Kirkus Reviews among the Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of 2011. 'Blake Charlton has created one of the few truly original magical systems we've seen in fantasy fiction' Tad Williams 'An absorbing read' Robin Hobb Leandra Weal has a bad habit of getting herself in dangerous situations. While hunting neodemons in her role as Warden of Ixos, Leandra obtains a prophetic spell that provides a glimpse one day into her future. She discovers that she is doomed to murder someone she loves, soon, but not who. Leandra's quest to unravel the mystery of the murder-she-will-commit becomes more urgent when her chronic disease flares up and the Ixonian Archipelago is plagued by natural disasters, demon worshiping cults, and fierce political infighting. Everywhere she turns, Leandra finds herself amid conflict. As chaos spreads across Ixos, Leandra and her troubled family - her misspelling wizard father Nicodemus Weal and dragon-of-a-mother Francesca DeVega - must race to uncover the shocking truth about a prophesied demonic invasion, human language, and their own identities-if they don't kill each other first.
