Synopsis

Little Wandle Code provides effective reading intervention for students in early Key Stage 3. This proven program―featuring ten age-appropriate, leveled, fully decodable anthologies and three workbooks―supports students who are not meeting age-related expectations when they begin secondary school.

The Space Race and Other Stories is the second anthology in the Complete the Code pathway. It is designed for students who may have gaps in their phonics knowledge that are partially masked by coping strategies.

This fully decodable anthology includes four texts for Units 4 and 5 in Complete the Code.

Across the program, the anthologies offer structured opportunities for students to practice phonics, broaden their vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, improve reading fluency, and build confidence as independent readers.

Designed to resemble the books their peers are reading, the anthologies feature:

  • A variety of content: fiction and nonfiction, covering a broad range of text types, genres, and well-known authors
  • Leveled practice: stories with varied word counts, lengths, and complexity, allowing flexibility, choice, and sufficient practice
  • Engaging visuals: a mix of illustration and photographic styles to motivate KS3 readers

The anthologies are fully integrated into the Little Wandle Code program and are supported by teacher and text notes available through the Little Wandle Code subscription.

About the Author

Tony Bradman began his career in the music press before joining Parents magazine in 1979, where he launched their highly successful children’s book pages and, in 1985, the Best Books for Babies Award. He became a full-time children’s author in 1987, and by 1992 he was among the top twenty most-borrowed children’s authors in UK public libraries. Since then, he has built a long and distinguished career writing for young readers across many genres and age groups.

Mio Debnam is the author of numerous books―from picture books to novels―and serves as a Regional Advisor for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
