We have designed this anthology for teachers and students in second-year Spanish classes who seek something other than traditional plots and pat answers. The characters in these seven contemporary one-act plays are sometimes outrageous, and their actions may seem absurd. The playwrights included here have rejected sentimental brimides in favor of harsher realities, which they portray with irony, force, and black humor. The plays frequently are allegorical and often touch upon social, philosophical, and political problems. Because of their generally veiled messages and imaginative forms, they lend themselves to a variety of interpretations, all of which we encourage readers to explore.
