This book is based on a one semester course given to undergraduates in applied mathematics at MIT and on a two quarter course given to mathematics and physics graduate students at Northwestern. It is concerned with some mathematical aspects of kinetic theory , statistical mechanics, and biology . These subjects have, of course, been studied for many years, but only relatively recently by mathematicians. Consequently, most books on statistical mechanics, for example, emphasize the physical rather than the mathematical aspects of the subject.
