Broadcaster Kubek, former shortstop for the 1961 New York Yankees, has written an enjoyable, touching tribute to the men of that legendary team. The year 1961 saw Roger Maris's stunning 61 homeruns, Mickey Mantle's own try at the homerun crown, and a hard-fought pennant race against a very talented Detroit team. The opening section on the late Maris not only chronicles the man's hitting and fielding, but candidly looks at the enormous personal pressure Maris had to endure, and highlights the deep respect and affection in which he was held by those who knew him. There is an informative overview of the whole season, as well as smaller chapters on other players. The book is simply written, full of anecdotes about Yankee greats and journeymen.
