From Library Journal:
Here, candid facial expressions that convey the gamut of human emotion have been dramatically photographed by such masters of photojournalism as Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White, Yousuf Karsh, Eliot Elisofon, Andreas Feininger, and Mary Ellen Mark. Loengard ( Life Classic Photographs , LJ 1/89), a former Life staffer, has selected approximately 140 of these images published in Life since 1936. Legendary faces are depicted--among them, Charlie Chaplin, Elizabeth Taylor, Louis Armstrong, Joseph Stalin, and Joe DiMaggio--as well as obscure ones--grieving Spanish mourners, French children entranced by a puppet show, a severely wounded soldier in Vietnam, men in a Chicago barroom watching the 1952 Yankees-Dodgers World Series broadcast. Insightful anecdotes and photographers' quotes accompany the photos. However, the material is so familiar that the book is an optional purchase.
