From Library Journal

Meyer, former editor-in-chief of American Artist , and illustrator Avillez have authored a fine manual for pen-and-ink drawing. Following the usual discussions of materials and tools and of the basics of drawing are chapters filled with fresh ideas on learning this art. One chapter introduces brushwork as a part of composition, another takes the student from photographs to finished drawings. Most important are the drawing exercises, which take a fluid approach to a subject, varying light and point of view and shifting visual interest. Also to the book's credit is its use of 29 different illustrators to inspire the student, among them Seymour Chwast and David Levine. This book is ideal for those wanting a more sophisticated manual than traditional works like Frank J. Lohan's Pen & Ink Sketching, Step by Step (Contemporary Bks., 1983). Daniel J.
