A boy and his dog spend the day at the beach building sand castles, watching ships, and playing with the ball that washes ashore.

PreSchool-K Ice cream-colored paintings in mint, peach, mocha, and strawberry depict a day on the beach. After building sand castles, Roy and his dog Buddy notice something ``bobbing in the waves.'' They retrieve a ball, which is ``smooth and round and striped like candy'' and spend the afternoon playing with their found treasure, leaving it behind at dusk for some other child to find and enjoy. The story is simple in text and theme, but it is sure to evoke memories of visits to the beach. And what child who has spent a day at the beach hasn't found a treasure in the sand. The acrylic paintings have a misty look, like humidity hanging in the hot summer air, which is balanced by the cool colors of the sea and sky. The solid figures have an earth-bound quality, yet exhibit energy in their stance. A wonderful first book by a talented artist. Karen K. Radtke, Milwaukee Public Library

On a hot summer day, Roy and his dog Buddy visit the seashore. Roy's parents bring along the beach gear and a picnic, and the party spends a leisurely afternoon sunbathing and swimming. Roy and Buddy unexpectedly discover an old ball bobbing on the waves, which they play with until the sun is low on the horizon. Rather than take the ball home with him, Roy decides to leave it for someone else to find and enjoy. Gebert's main idea is good, though the story doesn't make a lasting impression. But there is a lyricism in the paintingsthe soft colors look rubbed into the sandy landscape, and everything seems to glow with a patina of light and dusky shadows. Ages 3-6.
