Kindergarten-Grade 2 As last-minute preparations for Brendan's birthday party go on, Brendan's father gives him the digital stopwatch he had asked for. Brendan times: the frosting of the cake (6:41 min.), the lighting of the birthday candles (0:17), blowing them out (0:03), etc. In the course of the party, Brendan shares his stopwatchand a present. Watercolor illustrations in jellybean colors are appropriately energetic and show Brendan's guests to be multi-racial, male and female. An affable but unremarkable addition to collections where David Lloyd's The Stopwatch (Harper, 1986); Eve Rice's Benny Bakes a Cake (Greenwillow, 1981); Pat Hutchins' Happy Birthday, Sam (Greenwillow, 1978); and Russell Hoban's A Birthday for Frances (Harper, 1968) are not enough.
