Grade 3-5-- McGurk has been in some tight spots before, but this time his life is truly threatened. The trouble begins when walkie-talkies transport members of the McGurk Organization back to 12th-century England. A mysterious voice coming from their radios tells them about a princess being held prisoner by a dragon at a nearby castle. Meeting up with the dragon, the detectives quickly deduce that the mythical beast is actually two costumed kids who lure knights to the castle where they are imprisoned by Princess Melisande the Bad. (She likes to dine on leeches who have sucked on the blood of brave men.) One of the dungeon's residents is a young Irish chieftain named The McGurk. Unless he can free his ancestor, the modern day McGurk might never be born. With ingenuity, luck, and a bit of ventriloquism, all ends well. Although the action is rather convoluted and the logic weak at times, fans of the series will enjoy this adventure. The plot is reminiscent of Max and Me and the Time Machine (HBJ, 1983) by Gery Greer and Bob Ruddick, but most students have enough interest in the Middle Ages to enjoy both. --Jeanette Larson, Mesquite Public Library, TX
