Grade 3-6-McGurk and his gang are back, this time investigating vandalism to wet cement that progresses from innocent prints to deliberate maliciousness. Other tracks appear in the shape of an American flag, white paint footprints on new blacktop, green wolf prints on a car, and one elephant's footprint; all of them keep McGurk and readers in constant suspense. The black-and-white diagrams, measurements, clues, and notes scattered throughout invite readers to solve the mystery along with the young detective and his friends. Although the police are eventually called in and the culprit is an adult criminal (not just a prankster), McGurk and friends crack the case themselves, which makes for a satisfying ending.

Gr. 3-5. The case begins when McGurk and his gang of private detectives try to clear Whiskers the cat after he's charged with leaving his paw prints in wet cement. It escalates when someone tries to frame the gang as being the vandals who have left footprints all over the neighborhood. Using their special skills and their leader's great brain, the young detectives track down the crook and prove their innocence. Each of the kids has a distinct personality, and the narrator provides some wry humor. The villain, though, is generic and unconvincing, making the plot seem contrived and the story, finally, far-fetched. Still, the entertaining action, sleuthing, and conversation will keep McGurk fans happily reading another in the series. Carolyn Phelan
