Kindergarten-Grade 3?A cake and a lemon escape from the refrigerator and go off together to see the world. Friends traveling about and enjoying one another's company is hardly a new theme, and Razvan's poem does not rise above the pedestrian: "Crossing the street, the pair ducked for cover./We're free at last, we have the world to discover!" While the accompanying illustrations are bright, bold, and energetic, the text is not. For inspired poems about food worth tasting try Arnold Adoff's Chocolate Dreams (Lothrop, 1989) or Lee Bennett Hopkins's Munching (Little, 1985) and April, Bubbles, Chocolate (S.S., 1994.).?Kathleen Whalin, Greenwich Country Day School, CT

Ages 3^-6. Two unlikely friends strike out for adventure in this light confection of a book. A bright yellow lemon and a cherry-topped cake escape from a birthday party. They sail away amid flying fishes to a far-off land, where they attend a citrus-fruit wedding. After visiting the orchard where Lemon was born, the two head off into the sunset: "Let's continue to travel by land and sea. / Together forever, just you and me." The simple, pleasant rhymes are well suited to reading aloud. Fanciful illustrations capture the sweetly odd events in glowing colors with a lemony sheen. A whimsical choice for story time or bedtime. Leone McDermott
