From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-8-- Rosenberg's latest effort features 17 diverse testimonies from 8- to 13-year-olds living in single-parent homes. She has purposely selected stories of children who have found ways to cope so that others in similar circumstances may learn from their specific strategies. Similarities and differences proliferate, yet all interviewees have grown from their experiences and maintain a keen sensitivity and appreciation of their parents' responsibilitites and make concrete attempts to lighten their burdens when possible. Each account is illustrated with one or two small black-and-white photographs. Fostering and encouraging understanding and open communication, the book holds potential for use in both informational and therapeutic settings. Appended are brief annotated bibliographies for children and adults and a directory of addresses and/or telephone numbers for further information. Also included is a listing of practical ``Guidelines for Living with a Single Parent'' that can be adapted to most situations. This is a good companion to Bailey's Single Parent Families (Crestwood, 1989), which presents a therapeutic overview with coping suggestions for preadolescents and Dolmetsch's The Kid's Book about Single Parent Families (Doubleday, 1985 ; o.p.), which covers solid material in a less-personalized format. It's a much-needed and useful resource, but it may require help getting into the right hands. --Celia A. Huffman, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland
