From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-5-- Several weeks in the life of a Tennessee truck driver are chronicled in this black-and-white photo essay depicting a man and his rig on the road. Trucking terms are defined in context. A middle section of Phil with his wife and daughters, including an erroneously labeled kickball game when the kids are clearly playing softball, slows the motion of the story. The candid photos vary in quality, giving the pictures the immediacy of a family album; some are murky indoor or nighttime shots; others are unclear (if readers hadn't seen a CB, the picture of Phil talking to his fingers would not help clarify the concept); but many help readers see the variety of tasks a trucker works through such as securing a load, reforming his truck bed to accommodate a load of watermelons, or polishing his rig. The book ends blandly with several pages devoted to Phil's visit with his rig to his youngest daughter's first-grade classroom. Horenstein's Sam Goes Trucking (Houghton, 1989), with its posed photos, looks less real and is for a younger audience. Children who want to be truckers can meet a nice guy while experiencing the whole job here--the dirt, the waiting, the repairs, the fatigue, and the exhilaration of driving. It's too bad that the pictures don't have better focus and contrast. --Susan Hepler, Alexandria City Public Schools, VA
