The award-winning Encyclopedia Of African-American Culture And History set and its Supplement are the basis for the new four-volume African-American Culture And History: A Students Guide. Designed as a curriculum-related reference center, the set covers the African-American experience from 1619 to the present day. Articles are enhanced with sidebars including first-person accounts, stories, and references to movies and current popular culture. A resource list includes books, movies, magazines and Web sites.

Based on Macmillan's Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History (1996), this guide covers much of the same material but is written for sixth grade and up. Its 852 articles include "biographies of notable African Americans, events, historical eras, legal cases, areas of cultural achievement, professions, sports, and places." There are entries for all 50 states, 12 major cities, and 15 historically black colleges. New entries cover contemporary people and current topics such as Black Entertainment Television (BET). All of the entries were chosen to reflect the school curriculum and are up to date as of summer 2000.
Entries on broad topics, such as Entrepreneurs, begin with an overview of the subject, then present a chronological account of the topic up to the present. Biographies begin with the subject's occupation, birth date, and death date, where applicable. Some biographies are chronological, beginning with early years, while others begin with highlights of the subject's career and focus on his or her accomplishments.
To complement the more accessible writing style, there are numerous black-and-white photographs and sidebars. African American "firsts" and selected lists of literary works or recordings are presented in margin notes. As with the larger encyclopedia, only African Americans are profiled in the biographies. Non-African Americans who played a large part in African American culture are included in the index but not accorded a biographical entry. Cross-references are printed in boldface in the text, and many of the entries conclude with a see also note. The set ends with a chronology of African American history from 1444 through 2000, a glossary, an extensive list of suggested resources, including Web sites, and a comprehensive index.
Although this set is expensive, it is an excellent resource for public and school libraries. For those libraries that did not purchase the original encyclopedia, this is a good choice for a comprehensive, readable resource about African American culture and history. REVWR

Gr 6-10 This work is adapted from the scholarly Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History (Macmillan, 1995) and its supplement (2000). Some of the alphabetically arranged entries have been updated, some have been condensed, and others have been made more accessible for a younger audience. They cover the people, events, movements, and concepts of 500 years of history. Unique to this edition are the articles on each of the 50 states that present comparative information on such topics as original African-American settlement, slave population, events of the 19th and 20th centuries, and key figures. Boxed insets provide additional information. Suggested resources are listed in the final volume. The pleasing layout features red type for entry headings and subheadings, wide margins, and average-quality, black-and-white photographs. Articles about comic books, rap, and rastafarians will engage students, and other entries on standard assignment topics offer solid introductions to further inquiry.
