The development of business strategy is becoming the responsibility of employees at every level as company structures become more linear and manager positions fewer. The authors of this study, the heads of a firm specializing in strategic management and leadership, surveyed over 200 major companies (e.g., GM, Hewlett-Packard, the TVA) to ascertain the role of strategy within various jobs. They found it critical for management to express company goals clearly and to encourage all employees to develop strategies to improve a company's competitive edge. Appendixes contain helpful materials, including a self-assessment questionnaire for managers and a step-by-step guide to the strategic planning process. Although numerous books have been written on strategic planning from the manager's perspective (e.g., Michael Porter's Competitive Strategy, 1980), little is available on its use as a tool for employees' empowerment, making this book a worthwhile addition to business collections.?Kathy Shimpock-Vieweg, O'Connor-Cavanagh Lib., Phoenix, Ariz.
