In 1987 I was diagnosed HIV-positive. I was an injection drug user and the doctor just confirmed what I already knew in my heart. I thought I was prepared to hear what he had to say. Fat Chance! What he said was that since I was 'just' HIV-positive, there was nothing that could be done for me. His only advice was that I should have myself sterilized immediately....I left his office, and cried all the way home, and then I gave up. I spent the next month trying to kill myself via a monster heroin habit. Lucky for me, I ended up in jail instead of a grave.
