In 1983 Boyer and his research team produced High School , a major analysis of American secondary education, funded by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This companion volume identifies strengths and suggests improvements in the undergraduate experience. This readable study was constructed after on-site interviews at 29 colleges and universities. Additional information was garnered from thousands of questionnaires sent to faculty, chief academic officers, and undergraduates. All areas of the college experience are examined: recruitment, curriculum, library, dormitory life, placement service, even campus food. Successful innovative programs are highlighted. The book is replete with concrete, sometimes provocative, suggestions. Only in his examinations of campus governance and how to assess student outcomes does Boyer fall back on generalities. Sure to inspire a serious look at higher education, this landmark study belongs in the collections of all academic and large public libraries.Patricia Smith Butcher, Trenton State Coll . Lib., N.J.
