Improbable coincidences, unwieldy prose, and an excess of psychoanalysis torpedo this effort from the author of Let Us Prey. Set mainly around contemporary Las Vegas, this unconvincing thriller centers on professional assassin Arthur Arthur, a psychologically tortured sharpshooter who takes contracts only on individuals with a history of evildoing. The current target, Michael Patrick Henry, is beating local casinos out of big money by somehow anticipating movement in the point spreads of football games. The casino owners want Michael dead and hire Arthur and his partner, Montana, for the job. Arthur is willing because Michael has a reported history of selling drugs to children. But things heat up when Montana falls for Karla, who is best friends with Michael's new girlfriend, Melody. Arthur then meets and falls in love with Melody and thus unknowingly shares a woman with the man he must murder. The novel's many smaller coincidences are equally incredible. Branon invokes Arthur's dreams and earlier traumas in a heavy-handed, Jungian explanation of his character. When the heels of justice turn slowly, Arthur Arthur is the man to hire. A sniper in Vietnam, he has continued his work after his army days, but he works only for victims or cops constrained by legalities. Along with his spotter and "agent," Montana, Arthur heads for Vegas, where his target is a dope dealer who left behind a trail of ruined lives and corpses. Life isn't all mayhem and revenge for the boys, though. In Vegas, they pair with Karla and Melody, two sisters making a life in Glitter City; Karla is a waitress and Melody takes action at a sports book on the Strip. But Melody is already in love with a guy she met at the book, a player named Mike, who is also the target of Arthur's hit. For the first time Arthur is unable to pursue his target objectively. Eventually Melody learns of her two lovers' conflict and becomes entangled--emotionally and physically--in their life-and-death struggle, which is played out in the desert outside Vegas. An impressive crime novel, packed with real people beset by real conflict and trapped in a runaway situation, inexorably headed toward a violent conclusion. Wes Lukowsky

Branon is a retired dentist, career naval officer, and ocean sailor who has also done a lot of other stuff in the service of his country. We could tell you what, but then we'd have to kill you. Book as new, number line complete; signed by the author in ballpoint on the title page. Dust jacket has no tears, marks or mars, but all copies we have seen show a faint vertical strip of light rubbing down the black back panel, corresponding to the demarcation line between spine and board beneath.
