Bjrkvold (musicology, Univ. of Oslo) offers an examination of the creative process that focuses on the way we use music, movement, and rhythm in our childhood play. This muse-ical playfulness becomes stifled as we grow older and have to conform to the standards set by adults, he claims. Bjrkvold believes that without the rules imposed by current music teaching theory, children would be much more creative and develop a very sophisticated approach to learning music. Beyond childhood, music is used by people for some very specific purposes. Teenagers use it as a means of breaking away from their parents and as social commentary. Senior citizens use it as a link to their past or to younger generations. This book is well written, and the author makes some important points about music education. Recommended for large academic libraries.
