Reviews

Grade 1-3?Gans limits her discussion to basic facts about birds and their instinctive travel habits. She tells what ornithologists know about migration patterns and presents some of their theories about how birds know when to fly and their different means of navigation. Watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations show several species and their habitats, as well as a few maps and charts. The careful coloring and identification of specific birds add to the value of this attractive introductory text, but its lack of an index limits its use for reports.?Kathy East, Wood County District Public Library, OH

Ages 4^-8. Pictures and text work together beautifully to introduce facts about bird migration in this new addition to the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series. Richly colored double-spread artwork shows birds and children in a common habitat before focusing on birds themselves, in nests and on the wing. The crisply delivered accompanying text, larded with specific examples, delves into some of the tantalizing mysteries that surround birds' twice-yearly pilgrimage. Several maps are used to give children a sense of distances traveled, and because so many different varieties of birds are shown, always clearly labeled, children can use the book as a sort of informal spotter's guide.
