Gr. 3^-5. Similar to Simon's Space Words (1991), this environmental dictionary features definitions (up to a paragraph long) of terms such as biodegradable, biome, europhication, food web, oil spill, PCBs, and wetland. Sometimes Simon talks about a word rather than defining it. For example, the entry for sun describes it as "the center of the solar system" and discusses how it affects the earth's climate and ecology, but the paragraph doesn't describe the sun itself or identify it as a star. Less space is devoted to text than to the unusual and sometimes striking illustrations, which vary from the diagrammatic to the impressionistic to the hyperrealistic. In some cases, captions would have been helpful to explain what's happening in the pictures. Although children old enough to read the book could handle more information than is given for each topic, consider the book anyway as supplemental material for classroom units on ecology.
