Solberg, whose specialty is comparative literature, discusses the role geography has played in the history of this land that has always faced invasion and division, tracing its people from Paleolithic times and including information on the unique aspects of Korean language and culture as well as on the influences of the neighboring Chinese and Japanese societies. The book concludes with an evenhanded depiction of the politics, economics, and sociological attributes of North and South Korea. Occasionally dry and hard to read straight through, but the most thorough presentation of the subject yet for young people. Maps; extensive bibliography; index.
