PreSchool-Grade 1-- Although Leo the lion looks big and ferocious, inside he's "small and huggable," and longs to be petted. He's disappointed that nobody is brave enough to touch him. His problem is solved when he takes a train to the desert, where he meets Lea the lioness, and the two fall in love. Translated from the German, the story in English consists of words tossed together without magic or charm. The dull style lacks the spark necessary to support its overabundance of words. The presentation seems allegorical, and suffers from a resulting heaviness; the few verbal attempts at humor just don't make it. The quality of the watercolor and ink illustrations is uneven; some reflect a subtle and sophisticated charm while others are too drab and uninteresting to compensate for the text. They are, however, quite accomplished, bringing to mind Bill Peet's lions, but with a serious intensity. Although its heart is in the right place, weaknesses in its execution make Leo the Lion a very easy book to put down. --Liza Bliss, Leominster Public Library, MA
