Grade 6-8 Because his mother died during childbirth and his father disappeared shortly thereafter, 12-year-old Cady has been shuffled from relative to relative for all of his life. After the death of his grandmother, he finds himself in the care of Thea McVey, a stranger who seems to know much about him, but who will not answer questions about their relationship, his parents, or his past. Mutual trust and respect are slowly established between Thea and Cady, allowing the story of Cady's family to be revealed. While these characters and their situations sometimes provoke sympathy, the telling of their story has flaws that impede believability. Important plot developments seem contrived; for example, when Thea decides that Cady needs a friend his age, one appears. Careless attention to descriptive detail creates scenes of questionable authenticity: would a boy attempt to jump a flooded creek capable of toppling trees? Can an intricate carving of a bird be done in just a few hours? Character development is confused; some of Cady's problems with Thea are atttributed to the fact that he has never had a close relationship before, but this contradicts earlier descriptions of his relationship with his cousin Marrietta. Suspense is handled poorly; readers will guess long before Cady that the stranger in the woods is his father, and Thea his aunt. Too many similes are used, sometimes detracting from the mood or setting that Eige is attempting to create. Although a gently haunting quality may attract some readers, this novel reads like a first draft, in need of style, coherence, and a meticulous edit.
